Body image

Make peace with the body you live in.

When thoughts about your weight, shape or appearance take up hours of your day, it's hard to be present for anything else. Body image work helps you spend less energy on your body and more on your life. I offer online therapy for adults across California.

Your body is where you live, not a project you have to finish.

Does this sound familiar?

When your body takes up too much space in your head.

Body image struggles show up for people of every size and gender. You don't need an eating disorder for this to be worth working on.

Avoiding

Sitting things out

Skipping photos, the beach, the gym, dating or intimacy because of how you feel about your body.

Comparing

Measuring yourself against everyone

Scrolling, sizing up people around you, and always coming up short.

Mood

Your day rides on how you look

A "bad body day" can change your mood, your plans and how you treat yourself.

Muscle or weight

Preoccupied with size

Wanting to be smaller, bigger or more muscular, and feeling like it's never enough.

Routines

Rules about clothes and covering up

Outfits chosen to hide, layers in the heat, or rituals before you can leave the house.

How we work together

Less checking, less avoiding, more living.

Curiosity first, then small experiments, then an honest look at what worked. What sticks becomes a plan that's yours.

Notice the pattern

We get curious about what triggers the bad days and what checking or avoiding is doing for you.

Try small experiments

We practice cutting back on checking and avoidance in small, manageable steps, at your pace.

Widen the picture

We build a sense of worth that rests on more than how you look.

If your eating or exercise is affecting your physical health, I'll ask you to check in with a doctor, and I'll help you find a higher level of care if outpatient therapy isn't enough on its own.

Jonathan Dang, LMFT, CEDS

I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified Eating Disorder Specialist. Body image is at the heart of my eating disorder work, and I have a particular interest in how men experience it, including pressure around size and muscle.

I'll meet you where you are. Some clients want me to be direct, and others want space to reach their own conclusions. Either way, we'll figure it out together.

Common questions

FAQ

Do I need an eating disorder to work on body image?

No. Many people come to therapy only for body image. If it's taking up a lot of your time or keeping you from things you care about, it's worth addressing.

Is this the same as body dysmorphic disorder?

Not necessarily. Body dysmorphic disorder is a specific condition involving intense focus on perceived flaws. If it looks like that may be what's going on, we'll talk about the best fit for treatment, including a referral if that's the right call.

Will therapy make me love my body?

Maybe, but that's not the only goal. For many people, the bigger relief is caring less: spending less time and energy on their body so they can focus on their life.

How much does it cost, and do you take insurance?

An intake session is $225 and follow-up sessions are $190, with a sliding scale available on request. I'm private pay right now and in the process of joining insurance panels. I can give you a superbill to submit for out-of-network reimbursement. See rates.

Is therapy online?

Yes. All sessions are by secure video, for adults located in California.
